The world loves South Africa – with good reason. We’ve got vibrant personalities, cultures and cuisine. We’re “yebo”, “yes”, “ja” people, and no challenge is too big – we’re case in point having opened our doors as lockdown hit.
We’re a resilient bunch, with experts predicting that small businesses could be our economy’s saving grace. So while your inbox is flooded with Black Friday mails, opt to pull a ‘Gonana’ and embrace local brands this season.
Striking up conversations with the in-laws makes this time less festive, and more expensive. Here’s an olive branch (Mistletoe) from Gonana:

Be the first to taste our new ‘This is Africa’ coffee paired alongside our famous Scandi breakfasts. With a Great Dane as its logo, Terbodore Hand Roasted Coffee was the natural choice to have in our pet-friendly space. It is also “one of the most honest coffee brands around, not compromising on the taste and never forgetting” its roots – we had to raise a mug to that ethos!
You need more than a day for the West Coast, and luckily Gonana is the perfect base from which to explore this part of SA. We suggest taking a drive to Darling and looking for ‘stocking stuffings’ at Darling Sweets, and enjoying a fine dining lunch at Evita se Peron’s newest restaurant, Kossie Sikelela. For more #travelinspo check out our Activities page.
Throws, towels, and bath mats have a story to tell at Gonana as they all hail from Barrydale Hand Weavers. Owners Kate and Arran Batsable visited Barrydale in the Klein Karoo, where they fell in love with this small business before taking ownership in 2018. Their goal is to honour the ancient process of weaving, creating authentic and quality products, which we will attest to.
Buy experiences, not things! Support local brands like WOW eBikes and Kayak Paternoster, two businesses Gonana proudly partners with. At WOW eBikes our reservations team arrange discounted rates for international travellers and ‘first dibs’ on dates for local travelers who book with us over 48-hours in advance. Contact us to book these experiences on your behalf.
Love the hand wash, shower gels and soaps across our Gonana Collection? Then support Simply Bee, a local business just 50 km from us. Not only does Simply Bee produce pure and handmade beeswax products, but they’re also passionate about making them environmentally friendly and creating awareness around bee conservation. Find out more about Simply Bee in this blog.
Hoopsig is an NPC in Paternoster dedicated to providing a safe learning space to more than 60 local children each week. However, it does so much more than ‘just’ provide a meal to children or emergency food parcels to their families. As the name suggests, it provides hope, but sustainable hope in the sense that children are taught skills and given extra academic assistance to unlock, stimulate and support the development of Primary School children.
From today onwards, all guests who stay with the Gonana Collection donate R40 to Hoopsig upon checkout (unless they specify against this).
Consider donating by clicking the button below. FYI: R280 is enough to supply a daily nutritional meal to one child for two weeks at Hoopsig.

I firmly believe that if we grow local it benefits us all. It’s simple. Take Gonana, you support us by staying at our Collection, which then allows us to employ more local women who are in most instances, the breadwinners of their families.
By supporting us, you’re helping us refine our offering, as I know that there is always room for improvement. There’s always something more we should and could be doing, and this mindset of constantly striving to be better is what I want Gonana Collection to be known for.
Join me and the wonderful women I call family at Gonana. If you can’t visit us now, then follow us for updates on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
